When taking up his pencil or brush, the artist begins a magical exploration into the unexpected, a search through the ambiguity that lies behind the image, an attempt to interpret the narrative that slowly reveals itself.
The novelist John McGahern, has written: "In work there comes a time when we have to abandon the purel rational and trust to instinct and strong feeling and imagination, but it cannot be forgotten that the very abandonment is sanctioned by an intelligence aware of its own rationa limit."
Such guiding principles are as equally applicable to painters as they are to writers and I try to follow them when creating a picture.
